The study is based on the theoretical frameworks of cultural materialism and cultural symbolism. The research employs both documentary analysis and fieldwork conducted in Langya Town, Qingdao City, Shandong Province, China, involving observation and investigation of the food offerings used in the sea worship ceremony, as well as the changes in the industrial structure of the local fishing village. The findings reveal that the food offerings have continuously changed in response to economic, social, and cultural contexts. Notable characteristics include the integration of land- and sea-based ingredients, flexibility in the selection of ritual offerings, the use of auspicious symbolic representations, and a growing tendency toward utilitarian values. Moreover, these changes reflect the dynamic nature of the belief in the Dragon King, which continues to influence the daily lives of the fishermen, despite adaptations to modern times. This study demonstrates the relationship between folk beliefs and social change, and suggests that while rituals and offerings evolve over time, the belief in the Dragon King persists through its adaptation to changing social contexts.
Xiaolin Huang, Jantana Khocprasert, Chusak Suvimolstien ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://rsujournals.rsu.ac.th/index.php/jla/article/view/3714 Fri, 19 Dec 2025 02:51:09 SE Asia Standard Time Church Names in Chiang Mai Province: Word Compositions for Naming Reflecting Protestant Christian Identity https://rsujournals.rsu.ac.th/index.php/jla/article/view/3745
This research article aim to study the characteristics of naming church names reflecting the identity of Protestant Christians in Chiang Mai Province. The research employed a writing test of approximately 800 characters, with essay topics designed to elicit the use of benefactive expressions, particularly Te-kureru. From the written data, sentences that appeared unnatural without the use of Te-kureru were selected for analysis. The results were examined using percentage and categorized according to the learners’ Japanese proficiency levels. In addition, follow-up interviews were conducted after the test to analyze and consider reasons behind the avoidance of Te-kureru. From the written data, most learners tended to use Te-kureru correctly in contexts involving direct assistance, such as helping, teaching, or giving advice. However, frequent errors and avoidance were also observed. The primary reason for avoidance stems from learners’ self-interpretation of whether the verb conveys personal benefit. If they do not perceive such benefit, they refrain from using it—even in contexts where Japanese usage would require it. This avoidance reflects a lack of understanding of Japanese cultural thoughts embedded in language use, as well as conceptual differences in how learners interpret “benefit” from their own perspectives. Furthermore, confusion regarding the grammar itself, especially the use of benefactive auxiliary expressions in Japanese, contributes to this tendency.
Sayan Korsatianwong, Momo Shinoda ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://rsujournals.rsu.ac.th/index.php/jla/article/view/3896 Fri, 19 Dec 2025 02:57:30 SE Asia Standard Time Book Review: Ghosts in Thai Culture https://rsujournals.rsu.ac.th/index.php/jla/article/view/3895
Ghosts in Thai Culture written by experts from various fields and civil servants under the Fine Arts Department, aims to present local folk beliefs about ghosts as the foundation and origin of ghost-related beliefs in Thai culture. Deeply rooted in Thai society, these beliefs date back to prehistoric times. Sustained by afterlife traditions and rites practiced by villagers, they have gradually evolved into enduring and pervasive cultural traditions embraced by the Thai people and the monarchy alike. In contemporary society, “ghosts” have become a form of cultural capital that generates economic value and permeates modern media, including novels, films, television series, and social media platforms. By embracing ghost motifs, these media products often achieve widespread domestic and international popularity. This book is therefore regarded as a significant academic publication that synthesizes historical, archaeological, cultural, folkloric, anthropological, and communication arts perspectives in its examination of ghosts in Thai culture.
Prayma Sattayawuthiphong ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://rsujournals.rsu.ac.th/index.php/jla/article/view/3895 Fri, 19 Dec 2025 02:56:16 SE Asia Standard Time Appendix https://rsujournals.rsu.ac.th/index.php/jla/article/view/3919
-
jla manager ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://rsujournals.rsu.ac.th/index.php/jla/article/view/3919 Fri, 19 Dec 2025 02:49:24 SE Asia Standard Time
