The Beauty of Tuanshan Fan in the Song Dynasty: A Study from Artistic Aesthetics to Cultural Connotations

Abstract

Tuanshan Fan in the Song Dynasty is an essence of traditional Chinese culture. The study on “The Beauty of Tuanshan Fan in the Song Dynasty: A Study from Artistic Aesthetics to Cultural Connotations” aimed to find artistic aesthetics and cultural connotations of Tuanshan Fan in the Song Dynasty under the background of the prosperous society of the Song Dynasty. This research used documentary and field study at the National Palace Museum to collect data of Tuanshan Fan in the Song Dynasty from the drawings on Tuanshan Fan and the real one used in the palace. The results revealed that artistic aesthetics of Tuanshan Fan in the Song Dynasty was reflected through shapes, contents, used colors, and composition. For cultural connotations, they appeared as expressed love, communicated friendship, and love for fellowmen as well as righteousness. The results can be used as the body of knowledge, a reference, and a guideline on better understanding the essence of Tuanshan Fan in the Song Dynasty.
