The Roles of Muslim Newspaper: A Case Study of Kampong Newspaper

Abstract

The objectives of this article were to study the form, type, and quantity of the content presented in the Kampong Newspaper, as well as its content covering Islamic principles.  Tools used to collect the data consisted of coding sheets and the newspaper content.  The sample used in this study was Kampong Newspaper from May 2003 issues to February 2008 issues, totally forty-one issues.  Data analyses were measurement by square inch and content analysis concerning the principles of Islam in the newspaper.

              The results found that Kampong Newspaper’s presentation form was mostly advertising followed by articles, news, interviews, miscellaneous, editorials, and publicity.  The type of content was also mostly advertising, followed by topics ranging from society, politics, medical-health, international, religious-ethics-moral; economics, education, agriculture and agricultural technology, natural resources and environment, arts-culture-entertainment, law, science-technology-information-astronomy, sports, and history.  Moreover, it was found that the principles of faith mainly focused on God, followed by the Prophet, the Qur’an, the rules of good and evil, the last day and after the last day of resurrection, and the Presenter from God.  The principles of practices mostly dealt with prayers, followed by charity, fasting, and the Haji.
