The Knowledge Management of Local food culture in northern Thailand

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to (1) study the pattern of knowledge transfer of local food wisdom of the communities in the upper northern region  (2) study the knowledge management of local food in the upper northern region of Thailand to increase their commercial business strength.  Selling healthy food can generate more income for the community. The research method is participatory learning. The key informants are food experts, public health academics, cultural academics, and community representatives who know local food and disseminate knowledge about the food. Three of Northern provinces (Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, and Lamphun) are selected as using the purposive sampling. Total samples are 40 people.

               The research results are as follows: (1) From the influx of multinational cultures and the Northern food culture transfer in the present days, family members are an important part to bring the food culture back home and to preserve and inherit the Lanna food culture. In addition, the community members are aware of various changes of global conditions that affect local people as well. Therefore, whether these things exist or not, it depends on family and community including people in later generations. (2) Knowledge transfer pattern of local food and healthy food is to generate income for the community. The Northern community members need to realize on the inherit of cultures in the context and lifestyle of their community. (3) Original knowledge management of villagers is usually used by the person in that period of time. When the old generation passes away, the knowledge disappears with them. Therefore, local food & knowledge need to be shared generation to generation to preserve them for a long time.
