Development of Cognitive Flexibility and Inhibition Control Recovery Program on Coping in Patient with Schizophrenia

Abstract

The patients with Schizophrenia are deficit in thinking, perception, emotion and behaviors. Deficits in cognitive mechanisms result in the patient's inability to think flexibly and to inhibit behavior appropriately leading to ineffective coping and stress adaptation processes, which cause of readmission. This project aimed to develop cognitive flexibility and inhibition control recovery program on coping, and compared cognitive flexibility and inhibition control of coping abilities in patients with schizophrenia before and after received program. Project implementations comprised situational analysis of recurrence of schizophrenic patients that found the association with impaired cognitive flexibility and inhibition control, development of cognitive flexibility and inhibition control recovery program, content validity checks and revision of the program, tryout with 144 schizophrenic patients, and program evaluation using cognitive flexibility and inhibition control in coping skill questionnaire. The mean score comparison before and after conducting the program was analyzed by paired t test.

The results showed that after received the program, patients with schizophrenia had significantly higher average scores of cognitive flexibility and inhibition control of coping abilities than that of the before (p<.01). The satisfaction of nurses and schizophrenic patients participated in this program ranged from high to the highest level. This program should be used for psychosocial rehabilitation of schizophrenic patients in all in-patient departments and also develop abilities of nursing professionals to use this program effectively. Additionally, the program should be tested by quasi experimental design before disseminating to other hospitals.
