     This study aims to study the characteristics of meaning extension of motion verb ‘phaan (pass)’ in Thai, and to analyze the cognitive process of Thai native speakers which use the prototype passing motion event schema to express abstract concepts in conceptualization. Cognitive semantics is applied to the analysis, namely event schema expansion. Thai language data is collected from TNCs. The result of the study shows that meaning extension of motion verb ‘phaan (pass)’ can be divided into three directions caused by foregrounding, i.e. (1) foregrounding of moving object (2) foregrounding of landmark (3) foregrounding of moving path. Based on each direction, meaning extension was caused by metaphorical mapping between source domain and target domain. This study can increase understanding of Thai people’s conceptualization and cognitive structure, and then this study is expected to help improve the efficiency of teaching Thai as a foreign language.
