Abstract

The purposes of this article are to show the importance of guessing word
meanings from context clues and to explain how this strategy is effectively used
in class. Due to the fact that vocabulary is one of the significant components of
learning English, learners who lack adequate vocabulary always encounter
considerable difficulty during reading. To overcome reading difficulty, it is crucial


for English learners to be equipped with an effective means of learning new
words. Guessing word meanings from context clues is one effective vocabulary
learning strategy enabling learners to comprehend reading material and to
increase their vocabulary size. In addition to vocabulary expansion, context clue
strategies make a new word more memorable and aid in retention. According to
the mentioned benefits, it is imperative that instructors teach students to use
context clue strategies.
