THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUPPLEMENTARY ENGLISH READING COMPREHENSION EXERCISES BY USING TASK-BASED LEARNING FOR PRATHOMSUKSA SIX STUDENTS

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to: 1) develop and test the efficiency of supplementary English reading comprehension exercises by using task-based learning for Prathomsuksa six students, 2) compare students’ English reading ability before and after using supplementary English reading comprehension exercises and 3) study students’ opinions about the exercises. The sample, selected by a simple random sampling technique, comprises 30 sixth grade students of Ban Bo-It School, during the second semester of the academic year 2017. The instruments used for gathering data were 1) eight supplementary reading comprehension exercises by using task-based learning 2) eight English lesson plans 3) a reading proficiency test, used as a pretest and posttest and 4) a questionnaire on opinions toward the reading comprehension exercises. The data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation and statistical means of t-test.

The results of the study were:

1) The efficiency of supplementary reading comprehension exercises by using task-based learning was 77.40/76.44 percent. This means that the efficiency was higher than the expected criterion (75/75).

2) The students’ English reading ability after using the supplementary reading comprehension exercises by using task-based learning was significantly higher than the ability before using the exercises at the 0.05 level.

3) The students’ opinions toward the supplementary reading comprehension exercises by using task-based learning were highly positive.
