THE ANALYSIS OF ELLA FITZGERALD’S IMPROVISATION ON “FLYING HOME”

Abstract

This individual study, focused on and analysis of Ella Fitzgerald’s improvisation on “Flying home”, composed by Lioneol Hampton in the album Digital III Montruex 1979. The scope of this individual study rely on Motif ,Sequence, Scale and Arpeggios.

In Motivic Development ,Motivic Repetition, Melodic Sequence, Call and Response, Fragmentation, Rhythmic Alteration, Retrograde and mixing methods of motivic development have been found on Ella Fitzgerald’s Improvisation.

Major scale, Minor scale, Pentatonic Scale and arpeggios have been found as a tool to create motif and Sequence of Ella Fitzgerald. Moreover, using chromatic line also found to connect each melodies which create a unique characteristic of Call and Response on Ella Fitzgerald’s Improvisation.

In term of Syllable, Found a varieties of Syllable form Ella’s improvisation. The Alphabet that found most on Ella’s improvisation line was D followed by b h l and w while using ya or n as a linking Syllable. For Accent, Ella use a Short syllable such as duh dih bih etc.
