Abstract

Background: Seborrheic dermatitis is a common, chronic-recurrent inflammatory skin disease, the prevalence of which is around 3-5% in the general population. Seborrheic dermatitis is a non-contact disease that affects mental health, confidence and personality of the patients. Although it isn’t a dangerous disease but can be annoying and affects the routine of the patients because it is chronic inflammatory skin disease, the facial rash can affect the patients’ looks.

Now, the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis some patients have been used topical corticosteroids for a prolonged period, which could cause complications.  Many studies continue to find new potential treatments for seborrheic dermatitis. Due to the beneficial functions of hyaluronic acid include enhancing immune system, reducing skin inflammation and hydration, hyaluronic acid is likely to have potential for treatment of seborrheic dermatitis. The study of effectiveness of injection with an intradermal hyaluronic acid in facial seborrheic dermatitis treatment may be an effective therapeutic option for facial seborrheic dermatitis.

Objective: To examine the effect of injection with an intradermal hyaluronic acid in facial seborrheic dermatitis treatment.

Method: The study design was a Prospective experimental study controlled trial. 10 seborrheic dermatitis patients with mild to moderate severity evaluated by Investigator ‘s Global Assessment score (IGA score), tend to recur and relapse repeatedly at least 3 times a year. All of the patients were outpatient at Mae Fah Luang University Hospital, Bangkok.

At the beginning of the study, Patients were still having the seborrheic dermatitis symptoms and it appeared on the sides of the nose and both cheeks. The effectiveness of injection with an intradermal hyaluronic acid in facial seborrheic dermatitis treatment were evaluated by IGA score and Facial total target area score (FTTA score) before and after treatment at week 4, 8 including satisfaction assessment and complication of treatment by patients.

Result: IGA score decreased after treatment. Before treatment, mean of IGA score was 2.30 and decreased to 1.90 and 1.20 at week 4, 8. FTTA score also decreased after treatment. Before treatment, mean of FTTA was 3.40 and decreased to 2.50 and 1.60 at week 4, 8.

The study demonstrated a statistically significant decreased of IGA and FTTA score at week 4 and 8 (p<0.05). Global satisfaction of patients is mostly moderate.

Conclusion: These Data indicate that the injection with an intradermal hyaluronic acid could treat seborrheic dermatitis and may be an alternative therapy in seborrheic dermatitis patients with mild to moderate severity.
