Abstract
As a fortune telling medium, Seamsee (Chinese) has been used among the Thais and the Chinese-ethnic Thais for centuries. The medium is available in both Thai and Chinese temples around Thailand and contains messages often heeded by believers. An analysis of 8 sets or 275 written pieces of the fortune paper collected from recognized temples around Bangkok shows that the medium contains both physical and mental health information. Health promotion guidelines are provided based on Buddhist principles. Speech acts of prediction and advice are mainly employed.
