Abstract

Inspiration can affect one’s behavior to respond and cope with difficulties without giving up. This exploratory qualitative study, therefore, aims to investigate the performance inspiration of outstanding police officers at Chiang Mai Police Division in 2014.   In that year, the division was struggling through heavy load of work, lack of supporting sources, and opposition from people due to misunderstanding on police’s duties. Primary data were collected at the same time as participatory observation. The study aims to focus on secondary data from participants whose inspirations have been screened by completing questionnaires and informal interviews.  It was found that 2 out of 131 participants had inspirations, while the rest had motivations. These 2 officers’ inspirations were competence and desire to serve citizen by arresting of the perpetrator. It was also found that satisfaction towards work created encouragement to go through challenges. Such encouragement somewhat lessened once there was an ulterior motif (i.e., promotion), which later turned to motivation. This resulted in excellent performance as well as ability to deal with people who have misunderstood police’s work ethics. This study shows powerful sources of inspiration which lead to work competence. Thus motivational strategies should be used to better police officer’s acts along with development in position promotion in order to avoid any discouragement in work performance.
