A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF BILL EVANS’S AND KEITH JARRETT’S IMPROVISATION ON I LOVES YOU PORGY

Abstract

This analysis, focused on a comparison between Bill Evans and Keith Jarret’s improvisation on “I Loves You Porgy”. The researcher focused on an important factors such as harmony, improvisation, accompaniment and interpreting on the tune.

From an analysis, can be described in to 4 main factors on the following. In harmony, the researcher found the similarity of chromatic parallel approach, quartal voicing and upper structure on both pianists but they have the differentiation on using drop 2 and rootless voicing which can be found on Bill Evan’s. On improvisation, repeating a rhythmic sequence and motif development have been found as a similarity but block chord have been found only in Bill Evans’s line. In accompaniment, a broken chords, upbeat comping, two-three comping and pedal note Have been found as a similarity of both pianists. On interpretation, grace note and counter point have been found as similarity. A different between two pianists was Keith Jarret tends to play an octave upper or below from a melody while Bill Evans tend to use an augmentation as a tool to interpreting the tune.
