OUTCOMES OF CONSTIPATION PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT PRACTICE GUIDELINE IN PATIENTS WITH ADVANCED CANCER RECEIVING ORAL OPIOIDS

Abstract

The objectives of this pre and posttest design with comparison group were to investigate the outcomes of constipation prevention and management practice guideline on risk of constipation, perceived constipation, and symptoms with constipation. Systematic sampling of 60 patients with advanced cancer receiving oral opioids were recruited and divided into two groups; 30 received a usual care and 30 received an evidenced-based practice guideline for constipation prevention and management. Risk of constipation, perceived constipation and symptoms with constipation were collected before and 4 weeks after the guideline. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Chi-square (p= .076)

The findings showed that risk of constipation, perceived constipation and symptoms with constipation before and after and between intervention group were not significantly difference (p=.076). However risk of constipation of 4 patients in the intervention group was decreased from moderate level to low level. Laxative used and lifestyle modification with high fiber, adequate fluid intake, increase physical activity, bowel habit training, and regular bowel diary recording are suggested.
