PROMOTING RHYTHM AND MUSIC NOTATION OF BASIC WESTERN MUSIC USING VARK (VISUAL, AUDITORY, READ AND KINESTHETIC)

Abstract

At present, there are a number of students who are interested in learning music but not able to read notes or do not understand rhythm. This leads to low musical ability and skills. Thus, this research aimed to study a learning management using Visual - Auditory - Read – Kinesthetic (VARK) 1) to enhance students’ knowledge and understanding in basic Western music theory and practice on rhythm and notation in a military band of a government school in Bangkok, and 2) to study students’ achievement in learning basic Western music theory and practice on rhythm and notation using Visual - Auditory - Read – Kinesthetic (VARK). The sample group consisted of 11 students of a military band with an average age of 12-18 years old. The research instruments included 1) eight lesson plans (2 hours each) on VARK and 2) pre-test and post-test. Wilcoxon signed rank Test was applied for data analysis. . The result showed that the student had better learning achievement with Asymp. Sig at .003 which was statistically significant at an alpha level of 0.05.
