Abstract

The objectives of this research are (1) offer insight into how to interpret and perform Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 21, Op. 53 in C major, (2) examines piano practice techniques of this work, and (3) recommends interpretation and practice methods by the author. Similar to other works in this era, various piano techniques founded in this work such as staccato, legato, broken chord, arpeggio, octave, trill, tremolo, scale, alberti bass, and pedaling are presented. Practice procedure included analysis of the work as a whole, technical analysis, practice planning, determine the fingering, hands separate practice, using metronome, slow practicing, tone production, and technique acquisition.
