Nurses’ Abilities in Common Symptoms Management among Patients with Advanced Cancer

Abstract
This descriptive study aimed to investigate nurses’ abilities, and the relationships among knowledge, practice, and overall abilities in assessing and managing common symptoms in patients with advanced cancer, using the core competency of nurses and guidelines for symptoms assessment and management in patients with advanced cancer as conceptual framework. A total of 170 registered nurses providing care for patients with advanced cancer were recruited using a purposive sampling method. Data were collected using a personal information sheet and a nurses’ ability assessment form in managing common symptoms in patients with advanced cancer. The content validity index of the assessment form was 1, and the Cronbach's alpha coefficient ranged from .85 to .96. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman's rank correlation.
The research findings revealed that professional nurses perceived their abilities in symptom management—including knowledge, practice, and overall ability to assess and manage all common symptoms in patients with advanced cancer—as a moderate level. Nurses’ knowledge, practice, and the overall abilities to manage all common symptoms in patients with advanced cancer were significantly positively correlated at a moderate to high level (rs=.651-.835, p<.001). These findings provide foundational information for developing nursing practice guidelines and enhancing nurses’ abilities to effectively assess and manage common symptoms in patients with advanced cancer.
